FAQs About Dental Implants
For many people, problems with their outward appearance often center on their smile, especially if it has gaps, stains, or misalignments.
Dental implants replace missing teeth to improve the overall appearance of the smile and help you feel great about the way you look. Find out more about dental implants by reading below, and if you are interested in treatment, contact Dr. Robert Meister, Dr. Sean Ebrahimian, Dr. Marise Sheth, and Dr. Fahtema Sadat at Hillside Dentistry and Orthodontics in Torrance, CA.
What is a dental implant?
Implants consist of three pieces:
- Fixture: Working as the foundation of the restoration, the fixture refers to a titanium post that is implanted into the jawbone in order to replace the missing tooth root.
- Abutment: The implant’s abutment connects the fixture to the replacement tooth so as to anchor the completed implant into place.
- Prosthetic: Customized in a dental laboratory, the prosthetic tooth replaces your missing tooth above the gum line.
What can I expect from a dental implant procedure?
The procedure for a dental implant takes place in two phases: one for preparing the teeth and placing the fixture, and a second after the healing process to place the finalized prosthetic teeth. The time between phases depends on the type and amount of implants your dentist places. After the implant site heals, your dentist will attach the prosthetic tooth via the abutment.
Dental implants from our Torrance office
Implants are safe and have been in use for decades. Modern implants are made from titanium, and are able to replace a single tooth, several teeth in a row, or even an entire arch of teeth depending on the situation. A consultation with your dentist can help you to better understand this dental restoration and assess if it is the best treatment for your smile.
